Partner: ADORE, Khulna
Project Area: Khulna City Corporation (KCC)
Project Background
Women labourers employed in the informal sector are paid less than their male counterparts in Bangladesh. Women make up a significant percentage of the construction workforce of the country, but they are perceived as 'weak labourers' and are employed primarily for simple tasks requiring the least skill. As a result they earn lower wages than male construction workers. Women workers are also more likely to be offered only seasonal employment, remaining out of work during the rainy and other lean seasons. This leads to periods during which they are forced into taking high interest loans to make ends meet, which can result in a cycle of debt.
Project Details
ADORE in Khulna has formed self-managed cooperatives with women construction workers through which they can save money and borrow funds with little or no interest. The association has also offered alternative income generating activities for the women workers to enable them to improve their socio-economic status.
